Also commonly searched as "Jabao Cubano" or "Jabao Hot Sauce", the same Cuban jalapeño hot sauce, just spelled without the accent.

Jalabáo – The Winningest Cuban Hot Sauce

The name Jalabáo ™  comes from "Alabao!" (Cuban slang for OMG) plus "Jalapeño". To create the unbelievable flavor, we combine lots of jalapeño peppers,
green bell peppers, tomatoes, sweet onions, and a secret blend of Cuban spices, then run them through the homegrown process we developed for each of our sauces.⁣ Jalabáo packs a lot of flavor with a medium level of heat in a beautiful green Cuban Hot sauce.

Flavor profile: citrus-forward and garlic-forward over a grassy green-jalapeño base. The mojo’s sour orange and garlic keep the medium heat bright and food-friendly.

Frequently Asked Questions

How spicy is Jalabáo?
Jalabáo is the mild end of the Barbaro Mojo lineup, green-jalapeño heat with a Cuban mojo backbone. Friendly for kids and heat-shy eaters but still punches above a typical jarred salsa verde.
What does Jalabáo pair best with?
Eggs, breakfast tacos, avocado toast, grilled chicken, fish tacos, rice and beans, fries, burgers, and any Cuban sandwich. It's the everyday bottle to keep on the table.
Is Jalabáo gluten-free and vegan?
Yes. Jalabáo is gluten-free, vegan, and made with no high-fructose corn syrup. The mojo criollo base contains small amounts of food-safe preservatives (potassium sorbate and sodium benzoate) carried over from the citrus marinade, standard for shelf-stable citrus products. A small amount of xanthan gum keeps the sauce from separating on the shelf.
What's the difference between Jalabáo and a regular jalapeño hot sauce?
Jalabáo uses Cuban mojo (citrus + garlic + cumin) as its base instead of the salt-vinegar profile of typical jalapeño hot sauces. It tastes like a Cuban kitchen, not a bottled condiment.
What's in Jalabáo?
Distilled vinegar, jalapeño peppers, tomatoes, sweet onion, green bell pepper, our mojo criollo base (citrus, garlic, and Cuban spices), garlic, salt, lemon juice, and spices, plus a small amount of xanthan gum to keep the sauce from separating on the shelf. No fillers, no MSG, no extracts.
Is Jalabáo award-winning?
Yes. Jalabáo has medaled at the Fiery Foods Show and is a recurring favorite for Cuban-cuisine recipe pairings.
How do you pronounce Jalabáo, and what does the name mean?
Jalabáo is pronounced jah-lah-BAH-oh, with the stress on "bah". The name is a mash-up of "Alabao!", the Cuban exclamation for wow or oh my, and jalapeño, the pepper the sauce is built on. Say it out loud once and it sticks. If you see it written Jabao, that is the same sauce with the accent dropped.

Recipes to Try with Jalabáo

  • Golden fried chicken chunks, chicharron de pollo styleChicharrón de Pollo

A tablespoon or two of Jalabáo goes into the sour orange marinade before the chicken hits the oil, with the bottle on the table after.

  • Cuban yuca con mojo (cassava with garlic citrus sauce)Yuca con Mojo

Yuca is mild and starchy, so a few dashes of Jalabáo add jalapeño heat without covering the garlic mojo.

A drizzle of Jalabáo at the end blends right into the cumin and garlic.

Set each croqueta on a saltine with a dot of Jalabáo and eat it in two bites, the Cuban way.

  • Arroz frito cubano, Cuban Chinese fried rice, plated with bistec in mushroom sauce and mixed vegetablesArroz Frito Cubano

At 3 out of 10, Jalabáo cuts the salt and richness with green pepper and citrus instead of heat.

Our #2017

This hot sauce is fantastic! The hot sauces I pretty much always have are Tapatio, Texas Pete, and Franks, and this is unlike any of them, or anything else I've had. It's a bit thick and not a completely smooth puree. Citrus, garlic, and spices, complemented by a moderate heat that fades, leaving a savory aftertaste. It added a fresh, spicy kick to my simple black beans. I also had it on Rhode Island stuffed quahogs, and it would be hard to go back to Franks and lemon on them. Excellent seller as well, so TRY IT!
